The River

No serious angler's career would be complete without a trip to the Big Horn River. World renowned for its massive hatches, and LARGE rainbow and brown trout, it could arguably be the best trout river in the U.S. Located just north of the Wyoming state line in southeastern Montana, the Big Horn is easily reached from airports in Billings and Sheridan, Wyoming. The Big Horn fishes consistently year-round. As a tailwater fishery, its waters are almost always running clear and cold, and full of eager trout. The trout in the river average 15 inches, and commonly produce fish in the 20 inch range, and you can never count out a fish of truly behemoth proportions! The river is best known for the 12 mile stretch from the Afterbay Dam to the Bighorn Access, but trout can be caught to the Two Leggins Access a full 26 miles downstream. The area around the river is known for its desolate beauty, and from a fellow named Custer who visited a while back. Located in the heart of the Crow Indian Reservation, the Big Horn flows out of the massive Big Horn Lake, which offers fine recreational opportunities of its own. Coupled with a rich history of the old West, the Big Horn River is a must for any fly fisherman or fisherwoman.

Fishing Report

The river flows are starting to come down, are currently at 6000 cfs. Fishing remains good. Not too much in the way of dry fly fishing yet. San Juan worms, scuds and sowbugs are catching lots of fish. River bottom looks great, we really needed the flush. Should have killer black caddis action this year, once the river goes down some more and starts to warm up. KB 07-05-2008
